Top 10 Security Bulletin count for Microsoft products

Filed under: Two fisted Competition — Stefan Klose @ 11:08

As yesterday announced, i’m actually looking into Microsoft’s Technet Security Bulletin database. After parsing all the security bulletins, extracting the products and cleaning them from all minor update packs and gold statuses, i’ve created the following list. It shows the top 10 most updates for any Microsoft products:

Windows Server 2003 728
Windows Server 2003 x64 293
Internet Explorer 6.0 272
Windows XP Professional x64 247
Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 233
Internet Explorer 7.0 229
Windows XP Service Pack 2 203
Windows 98 156
Windows XP Service Pack 1 142
Windows Vista x64 142

Overall, there have been 304 products 5758 times been updated since January 2000. Most updated product is Windows Server 2003 (with more than 1.000 updates in time). The large numbers are related are related to the way i’ve counted: While any security bulletin contains a list of the affected software, i’ve split up this list and attended one security bulletin to any elements of this list.

Most of the updates are critical (3.589), some are important (1.285) and there’s only a small count of not rated (527) and moderate (333) updates.

Internet Explorer 6, which i stated the most updated product by Microsoft, is right behind Windows Server 2003. Due to the way i’ve counted the patches, including half a dozen of different Server 2003 versions, IE6 is almost at the lead. The only thing i’m confused about is – why didn’t Microsoft release an update to Internet Explorer 6′s HTML engine? Would have been that easy…
